Antioxidant Source: Almonds are one of the leading food sources of alpha-tocopherol vitamin E. Alpha-tocopherol is the kind of vitamin E the human body absorbs best. Data shows that most Americans get only half of their recommended vitamin E per day and almonds are the ideal way to close that gap.
Almonds aren’t typically known for their antioxidants beyond vitamin E. However, in a study published in the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry, experts determined the total antioxidants (phenols, flavonoids, and phenolic acids) in California almonds’ skins and kernels using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC)/electrochemical detection, UV detection and mass spectrometry. They found that almonds contain flavonoids and phenolics in their skins similar to certain fruits and vegetables.
The study authors concluded that a one-ounce serving of almonds contains a similar amount of total polyphenols as one cup of green tea and 1/2 cup of steamed broccoli
Wow, that's good news for all of us, particularly those that have trouble with green tea or the "can't stand broccoli crowd".
